Denfeld High School

expansion and remodel of a historic learning center in west duluth

ISD 709’s Long-Range Facilities Plan was created to address
the challenges of building deficiencies and enrollment
changes and to ensure children and staff will have
safe, comfortable, and efficient schools for the next 20-
30 years. Since 2006, the plan has moved from research
to planning to implementation. The entire school district
(more than 10 facilities) would be brought up to modern
standards by 2012. This includes closing schools, remodeling,
renovating, adding on and building new.

DSGW worked closely with staff and the community
in this major addition and renovation to the historical
building - Denfeld High School. The goal of this entire
300,000sf project is to honor Denfeld’s past, but make
it look like a new, modern school for kids arriving from
other high schools. The new main entrance, for example,
frames the clock tower and complements the existing
structure.

Off the main entry, a new addition for offices, food service
and media center will be built. On the second floor,
a new science wing will provide laboratory space.

Once the work is completed on the front of the building,
Phase II of the upgrade will begin: a complete interior
renovation and an addition for technical courses on the
north side of the school.
