Bois Forte Cultural Museum
Celebrating heritage
This picturesque destination is visible from the city’s hilltops and punctuates the gorgeous shoreline. The Bois Forte Cultural Museum reflects the history and culture of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe. DSGW worked with the client to develop a program, establish a budget and produce a design that would fit the aesthetic and functional needs. The process involved working with a committee comprised of band members—from youth to elders—that represented the history and future of the band. DSGW assessed the archival needs and conducted an inventory analysis to determine space requirements.
The museum’s shape was designed to pay homage to the shelters used in the Ojibwe culture. The space was programmed to showcase a variety of exhibits including a fur trading post and Veteran’s wall that pays tribute to Bois Forte Band members who served their country. Public spaces accommodate interactive storytelling sessions, demonstrations and community gatherings. The interiors demonstrate the importance of natural surroundings by incorporating materials indigenous to the region. Colors reflect earth materials such as stone and clay. A gift shop is also included so tourists can take home handcrafted souvenirs.
